Podcasting is a great way to ensure students have access to learning whenever and wherever it's convenient for them. It can also reduce the amount of time you spend talking and chalking in class.
This type of podcast could be used to convey information (like you would in class) but in the form of a recording saved as a movie file. You can then post these recordings on the internet (you can make it quite secure if you're a little shy...) where students can listen to them on their computers or download them to ipods or mobile phones.
To create these I use software called audacity to create a voice over track. If you're not sure what this is all about I suggest you check out the create an audio-only podcast page out first.
Once I have my audio track created I then use Microsoft MovieMaker Live to link my videos to both still and moving images. Check out the podcast below to show you how to do this. It might be a good idea to pause it in places while you give things a try...
Beneath this video is some information that may help you to upload you podcast on the internet.
Once you've created your podcast you then need to find a way to get it online. I find the easiest way to do this is to upload my videos on to youtube and then embeding them into my wikispace. Try following these instructions to help you do this...
1. Go to www.youtube.com and create an account
2. Once you get back to the main Youtube page, you will see a link at the top of the page that says "upload". Give it a click
3. Now follow the instruction on this page. this will help you locate the file you want to upload and allow you to create a title and description for your video. A bar will display that will tell you how the upload is progressing.
4. Once the podcast is "live" and accessible by others on the internet you can embed it into your wikispace. To do this open up the wiki page where you would like it to appear and click edit.
5. When the editing toolbar pops up choose the button that says "widget" and has a picture of a TV on it.
6. Choose video from the left hand list and then Youtube from the options it provides.
7. It then asks for information about the video. You simply need to cut and paste the url (internet address) for the youtube page where you video is located and paste it into the big empy box. Then click save.
8. Click save again on the editing toolbar and your new podcast should now appear on your wikipage.
